Omega equalisedEF / ED thrust bearings
The Omega thrust ring with a continuous equalising linkage. Choose the 8 or 11 pad range and explore flooded EF and directed ED arrangements.
THE DESIGN
EF / ED thrust bearings.
Equalised Omega rings seat the thrust pads on upper equalising segments. Barrel-shaped upper segments tilt and move axially within holes in the retaining ring; lower sector segments link neighbouring supports into a continuous pivoting chain. Hardened contact faces transmit the load. EF and ED share the equalising principle but use different oil arrangements and installation details. Their dimensions must remain separate from non-equalised N rings with similar numeric references.
INSIDE THE BEARING
Construction & operating principle
01Equalising linkage
Upper segments support the pads and lower sector segments bridge adjacent supports. Locating pins retain the lower segments, while a spring retains the otherwise unsupported upper segment when a half ring is handled.
02EF flooded arrangement
Recirculation slots at the ring outside diameter work with the spaces between lower segments to provide a flow path towards the pad inside diameter.
03ED directed arrangement
The peripheral groove distributes pressurised oil to radial drillings and jets between pads. Spacer wings are removed to leave a flow path. The ring outside diameter forms a controlled leakage seal.
04Installation details
Ring stops prevent rotation of the complete assembly. ED stop dimensions and EF pin/key dimensions are separately tabulated. Diameter tolerance bands use an open lower boundary and inclusive upper boundary.
One equalising principle. Two oil arrangements.
EF retains a flooded oil circulation path. ED supplies oil through a peripheral annulus and directed jets, allowing used oil to drain. Use the arrangement control beside the size table to read the applicable stop dimensions and fit tolerances. Pad count and numeric ring reference do not establish equivalence with the non-equalised range.

Technical guide
Explore the materials, operating requirements and arrangement details for Omega equalised bearings.
EF and ED installation requirements
EF provides flooded lubrication. Slots in the retaining-ring outside diameter and the spaces between the lower equalising segments form the recirculation path to the pad inside diameter.
ED uses a circumferential pressurised-oil distribution groove, radial drillings and jets between the pads. The pad spacer wings are removed for the jet flow path, and the ring outside diameter is machined as a controlled-leakage seal for the peripheral groove.
- ED drilled jet holes
- Minimum diameter 1.5 mm.
- Use the ring-stop geometry, housing fit and ring fit for the chosen EF or ED arrangement. The ring stop locates in a recess at the thrust-housing joint to prevent the complete bearing from rotating with the collar.
Handling and axial adjusting liners
The equalised retaining ring is supplied in halves. A retaining spring holds the otherwise unsupported upper equalising segment in each half during handling.
Optional adjusting liners are also in halves. They are located by the lower-segment pins, which are supplied with additional length for this arrangement. The steel liner can be supplied oversize for finish machining during installation or finished to its specified size.
- Whole retaining rings are not supplied for the EF or ED series.
Understanding the equalised reference code
- 08 / 11 and pad size
- The first two digits identify the number of pads in a full ring; the following three digits identify the approximate pad width in millimetres.
- E
- Equalising segments fitted.
- F / D
- F: flooded lubrication. D: directed, low-loss lubrication.
- L / R / C
- L: left-hand, anticlockwise. R: right-hand, clockwise. C: centre-pivoted pads. Handing is assessed while looking in the direction of thrust at the whitemetal faces.
- H
- Retaining ring in halves.
- A / B / B₁ / B₃
- A: without liners. B: with liners. B₁: steel liner supplied thick for finishing during installation. B₃: steel liner supplied finished to the specified size.
Single, double and surge arrangements
- Double thrust bearing, arrangement I
- Two complete thrust rings, one for each thrust face.
- Single thrust and surge bearing, arrangement V
- A main thrust ring and a smaller ring for the opposite duty.
- Single thrust bearing, arrangement VII
- One complete thrust ring.
- State the required quantity and the duty on each face. Confirm the pad handing, lubrication and liner requirement for each ring with our engineers.
Materials used in standard manufacture
The German and American materials are near equivalents; minor variations in composition and properties can exist. Screw threads follow ISO metric standards.

Technical notes
- 01
The 8-pad and 11-pad ranges each contain 21 dimensioned ring sizes. Choose the pad count and lubrication arrangement before comparing installation details.
- 02
EF and ED dimensions and fit deviations are separately scoped. Pin and key dimensions apply to the stated stop arrangement.
- 03
Tolerance bands apply only where over < C ≤ up-to-and-including. No band is extrapolated outside its stated interval.
- 04
Final dimensions are confirmed on receipt of order. Normal operating loads distinguish centre and offset pivot conditions.
